How to Carve a Watermelon Ladybug

This year we are starting a new family tradition to celebrate the 4th of July. With the birth of our daughter, holiday celebrations have been rejuvenated and I am constantly thinking of traditions to incorporate to create a lifetime of memories.

Annual 4th of July Watermelon Carving Tradition

I thought it would be great entertainment to begin an annual watermelon carving tradition. Each year we will hunt for pictures and tutorials (or create our own) to carve a watermelon into something edible and amusing! This year we are carving a ladybug out of our watermelons. I saw this idea on Rachael Ray’s cooking show and thought it would be superb for us because our daughter is currently fascinated with ladybugs.

First, you’ll need to gather your ingredients and tools.

  • Watermelons (one for each carving participant. Young children enjoy helping decorate an adults watermelon).

  • Watermelon baller (a special tool that helps carve out balls in your watermelon. We bought ours for less than $3 from Walmart).

  • A sharp knife for carving

  • Toothpicks

  • Blackberries or blueberries (for the ”spots” on the ladybug). Plus extra fruit to create a fruit salad with: strawberries, grapes, melon, pineapple, etc.

We enjoyed carving our watermelons and will continue this tradition every year. It’s a great way to connect with your family during the summer and create memories. Now, grab you a watermelon and start carving!

I'd like to encourage you today to think of a fun way to incorporate your children into preparing a creative food dish for everyone. And remember the memory is more important than perfection ;-)
